DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE WATER

With sharks much in the news this summer, a recent conference in Sydney to discuss the shark threat to NSW beaches heard from the State’s chief shark-spotter that “eyes on the water” are the best safeguard against shark-attack.

“For 30 years we’ve said that trained officials from elevated positions who are constantly watching the water is the best way to spot and then act on shark activity,” said Ken Holloway of the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association.

Bondi lifeguard Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins told the Wentworth Courier that the lifeguards in the central and North Bondi lifeguard towers were constantly monitoring the water. They also had “eyes” at the Bondi Baths on the lookout for the dreaded black fin in the water.

(There are also moves afoot to have regular drone-patrols at Bondi to spot sharks from the air. Waverley Council is looking into the feasibility of such patrols.)

So far this summer there have been only a few occasions when the shark-alarm has had to be sounded at Bondi.
