BEACH SCARRED BY FREAK STORM
The freak storm – some called it a tornado – that struck the coast of Sydney left a stain of debris scattered across Bondi Beach.
Ancient watercourses that used to run down from Bellevue Hill through the lagoons behind the beach were revived by the storm-water generated by the storm, and flooded on to the beach where storm-water outfalls used to be (before they were redirected to exits further around the rocks.
The storm caused considerable damage along the coastline, and Kurnell especially suffered, with many houses being damaged and unroofed.
The roof of part of Westfield’s shopping centre at Bondi Junction fell in during the storm, but no one was seriously injured.
