BONDI PARKING INCOME SET TO TOP RATE REVENUE

Waverley Council is on track to raise more revenue from parking and parking fines than its rate revenue.

The latest council figures available (2010-11) indicate that the council raised $27.5 million through rates (30% of its income); $10.9 million from parking fines (12%); and $13.3 million from parking fees (13.3%).

The council expects its parking income to surpass its rates revenue in the next few years (particularly from Bondi, now that the council charges for hourly parking around the Pavilion and its adjacent areas).

“The council is using its streets as a milch-cow,” a long-time Bondi resident complained to The Bondi Daily. “Next time you get a parking ticket, be happy in the knowledge that you are fattening their bloated expenditure.”
