Bondi might soon be a safer beach to swim and surf at.

The Baird Government is considering upgrading the existing shark-meshing nets at Bondi and other Sydney coastal beaches with new “eco-friendly” nylon nets.

The existing Bondi shark net helped trap and kill more than 90 sharks off Sydney beaches last summer, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The new nets, if the planned installation goes ahead, would be bigger and more effective, according to the firm that produces the nets, “providing a complete barrier from seabed to surface”.

The NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, told the Telegraph that if the new nets saved lives, they would be worth the estimated cost of about $11,000 per net.
