After coming to Australia on a perilous, leaky boat, the last thing you would think a refugee would want is to get in the water again.

However, a refugee advocacy group called Settlement Services International is helping refugees who came by boat to learn to surf at Bondi.

Aided by local surfboard shop Let’s Go Surfing in Ramsgate Avenue, Sydney case manager Sandra Oehman is arranging surfboard lessons for some of her clients every second Thursday at Bondi.

“By learning to catch waves they get back a feeling of confidence in the water,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald. “Just going in makes them feel better straight away.”
