New Year’s Day saw one of the biggest crowds on Bondi Beach in recent years, a long-time resident of Bondi told The Bondi Daily. “They’re must have been over 20,000 there,” the old-timer said.

Given good beach weather, New Year’s Day is traditionally Bondi’s busiest day. Not only was the beach crowded, but the streets behind the beach were thronged with beachgoers, backpackers, and tourists. (Finding a place to park was a herculean task.)

“But,” said the old-timer, “that crowd was modest compared with what it would have been in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, when the trams were running.

“Then, on a good day at Bondi you could have got between 50,000 and 80,000. But, of course, that was before everyone had a car, and there wasn’t much else you could do on a Sunday.”
