GROG PATROL NEEDED?
Waverley Council is being urged to adopt stricter enforcement measures to police the alcohol-free zones in and around its beaches.
Although the Sydney Morning Herald recently reported that alcohol consumption in Australia is steadily decreasing, it is rising in certain subsets of the population, such as the young and indigenous drinkers – and especially backpackers from overseas.
Signs are displayed on the council’s three main beaches – Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte – prohibiting the consumption of alcohol, and the council has a team of rangers charged with enforcing the ban.
A long-time Bondi local told The Bondi Daily: “But they have as much chance of stopping drinking on Bondi as Aub Laidlaw had of keeping bikinis off the beach in the 1950s.”
