Police may soon be stopping cyclists riding along Bondi’s scenic seaside routes and asking for identification under upcoming changes to current cycling laws.

From March, cyclists will for the first time face fines for infractions such as riding without a helmet, running red lights, or simply riding without adequate identification.

A group of more than a hundred cyclists rode through the CBD to protest this change, arguing that more needs to be done to protect them from motorists, rather than heaping new regulations on suffering riders.

While police will be checking cyclists’ IDs from March, penalties will not be applied for the first 12 months to allow people to adjust to the law.
