ANNIVERSARY OF BONDI’S WORST DAY
This weekend – February 6/7 - is the anniversary of the worst day ever at Bondi Beach. Exactly 78 years ago a giant wave hit the beach and demolished a sand-bank on which hundreds of surfers were standing in waist-deep water.
Five people drowned and over 200 were pulled from the water, many of them needing urgent resuscitation. But for the quick work of the surf-lifesavers, beach inspectors and experienced volunteers, the death toll would have been higher.
A particularly large crowd was at the beach that day, taking advantage of the warm weather and what seemed perfect beach-conditions. (Also the Empire Games were scheduled to start, and there were many visitors in Sydney and at Bondi for the events.)
It was the largest mass-rescue in Australian beach-history, and also the most tragic.
