POMS A THREAT TO BONDI’S OYSTERS
An outbreak of Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome (POMS) in Tasmanian oyster stocks has raised concerns for oyster supplies on the mainland, potentially restricting those available for Bondi’s seafood restaurants.
Interstate bans placed on seed stock from the afflicted regions will affect local oyster farmers, who are relying heavily upon imported stock in the wake of floods in August last year, which washed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of immature pacific oysters out to sea.
While Tasmanian farmers will suffer most, POMS will inevitably shrink supplies of Pacific Oysters to Sydney restaurants, including Bondi.
Fortunately, the smaller – and some say tastier - local Sydney rock oysters remain unharmed by POMS, which poses no threat to humans (apart to their enjoyment of Pacific Oysters).
