Waverley Council is setting up what it calls a Gen Y Book Club, intended to attract young adults between 18 and 30 to the municipal library at Bondi Junction.

Although this cultural initiative has produced an encouraging local response, this week’s first meeting of the club at the library will be a women-only affair. No young adult males have accepted the library’s invitation to come along.

The club’s meetings involve participants sitting down with a glass of wine to discuss books targeted at younger readers. “This means no classics or books over 400 pages,” explained Waverley Library events and engagement manager Simon Welsh.

He expressed optimism that the gender imbalance would be corrected at future Book Club get-togethers. Nevertheless, the club’s first meeting on February 17 is booked out.
