The Daily Telegraph, which is currently running a campaign against “dole bludgers”, went to Bondi Beach this week to find some beach bludgers, but instead found young people either working or looking for work. (What they were doing at the beach around midday was not explained.)

A young man from Coogee (clearly the surf was better at Bondi) told the Tele that he had no time for “bludgers” who refuse to catch the bus to potential work. “If you’re not willing to catch the bus, you should pull your head in,” he said.

One recent arrival from Brazil said she had got a job in her first week in Australia. “And I couldn’t even speak English.”

On the other hand, Lana from Italy said she had been unsuccessfully pounding the pavement trying to find work, but said she wasn’t giving up, and rolled over.
