MEMORIES OF WONDERLAND AT TAMARAMA
Residents of Harry Seidler’s iconic block of units in Illawong Street Tamarama are pushing to have the revamped building named after Wonderland, the fun-park that used to be situated below it, fronting Tamarama Beach (see picture below).
Over 80% of the existing residents recently voted to approve a $50 million upgrade of the decaying block, which they hope to recoup by selling vacant units in the new building, plus two new penthouses.
Wonderland was one of Sydney’s most popular beach attractions, and included an aquarium, roller-coaster, and circus with elephant rides.
To this day there is a Wonderland Avenue off Fletcher Street leading down to the former amusement park, which also featured air-balloon rides.
